I've read a lot about a "rooting medium". What is it? A tiny starter pot?

The rooting medium is usually the "soil" in which you'd plant your cutting - very often not soil at all but a precise mix of nutrients and easily drained, porous material - that is usually much better for root production than just plain dirt.
Different cuttings will sometimes need different media - I believe cactus and succulents need to be rooted in sand.

A good rooting medium is peat moss and perlite mixed together in a 3 or 4 to one proportion. Add relatively more perlite for succulents and less for ferns.
