My daughter was given a little white pine seedling as an award at school. It only came with a little baggie wrapped around it's roots. I have no idea what to do with it now since we've got snow now. It's only about a foot tall.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Michelle<><

Michelle,
How much room you got??

Those tree's can get mighty tall..
We have one by our house, that's very old
but it towers over our two story house....

My daughter brought 3 of those home from school in a baggie when she was about 10 years old. By the time she was 16, they were towering WAY above my house! I could not belive how fast they grew!
And they were SO beautiful!

well, we've only been in our house 2 years, and just had our front yard landscaped this past summer, but there is absolutely nothing in our back yard yet. Although it is a small yard. You know these new subdivisions, they charge a fortune for the houses, and you're lucky if you have enough lawn to justify a lawn mower! [Frown] There is enough room for the tree, I've looked on the internet and have seen how big they grow, the sad part is, we don't plan on staying in this house for more than another 5 years. I'm gonna hate to leave her "little" tree behind [tears] ..but I'm afraid it's gonna die if I don't do something soon!! Our ground is gonna be frozen in no time!!(If it's not already!!)
It's in a little pot outside (cause i was told it needed to be outside), and that dirt is already frozen, and the tree is bent over and I'm getting worried!!
Any ideas?
Thanks, Michelle<><

Michelle,
I am by far a tree expert, but I would think it would be basically okay to leave it in the pot for now!!!
It will go dormant for winter time..
If it's bent over, maybe check water, still needs water but not kept soggy...and then check where it is, for two reason's, if it's bent over maybe because of the wind??? [dunno] it's small and doesn't have it's anchoring roots yet...and then check for how it's stored... is the bottom of the pot on the ground? Not up in the air say like on top of a table or something???
If you put it on the ground, put a piece of landscape fabric first *that will keep the roots from going into the soil too much when you go to replant...but it should be on top of the ground area with the fabric so the roots are not exposed to the winters' eliments, such as wind, freezing temps, and should be buffered a bit with say something like chopped leaves for insulation against the cold... Alot of times when you see plants that didn't make it thru the winter is because of the freezing winds and air on roots.

But put some of that fabric first on the ground,
in a protected area with a Southern exposure for good sun, and put the pot/tree on top of it, and take the chopped up leaves or a pile of mulch and build it up around the base of the pot, only to the top of the pot, outside, don't cover the stem, that can encourage the stem to stay too moist and invite pests and disease's...

I can say they do grow trees in containers, I know Papito has several different types of plants in pots and he maybe able to help you a bit in that area!!!

So, that maybe be an option for you to keep up grading the size of the pot each year until you actually move...

The only one thing I am not too clear on is
root developement for a tree in a pot...
I know they need to develope them, and I am not sure if they have a deep tap root, I am thinking here off the top of my head that they DON'T, but develope large side roots for feeding and steadying themselves in the winds???
What it might do to the tree in the meantime, I am not too sure???

Hopefully some one with a little bit more root knowledge will come thru and give you a helping hand.??? If not bring the post back up and we'll do some info hunting for you!!

Thanks Weezie for your informative reply...I only had the tree in a 4" pot just so I could get it outside, but then it froze and fell over! [Frown] So I just thought I'd take my chances and do the best I could. I had gone to our garden centre a couple of weeks ago and got some info...I planted it in the ground with some good soil (our lawn is still fairly young, so it is mostly construction debris and clay when you dig more than a few inches..) and some bone meal ( [dunno] ) and then put an inverted pot with the bottom cut out around it for a wind break. So, now I'll just wait and see and hope for the best! [Roll Eyes] I hope the poor thing survives!! It's so little and fragile looking! Thanks again for the help.
Blessings,
Michelle<><

the tree needs to be planted plant pot and all plant pot at ground level if you dont it might freez the roots and the tree will die.you can repot the tree evry year into a bigger pot.eather that or mulch the pot since its out side.the roots need to be insulated. i do this with plants that i sell on weekends at yard sales.they will survive winter weather that way.then when you need it just dig up the pot. good luck with the tree mike57
