My Russian Sage looks Great! Keep getting conflicting advice as to whether to cut it to the ground, just trim or leave alone about January. Which one is right?

I leave mine alone until early spring and then I cut it back by about half. Many of the sages are said to overwinter better if left alone and trimmed in spring, so that's what I do just in case.
