Do you cut back butterfly bushes in the fall? Also, it is important to continue to put 6 or more inches of mulch around it over the winter?

Hi, I cut mine back in the early spring when I see new shoots coming up from the ground. I only mulch mine to make them look decent. I'm in a pretty warm climate, zone 8, so I don't have to worry about a prolonged cold snap!!!!!!

Mine blooms beautifully but it only sends out 3 or 4 branches. How can I get it to thicken up a bit?
