I live in Houston, Tx. I bought a Bird of Paradise about 6 months ago and it has grown about a foot. It is in a pot and I leave it outside except when it freezes. Will it bloom in Houston, and will I have to feed it any special food? Should I keep it in a partially shady spot in the heat of the summer? Help!!

Come back often and check for more info. I know lots of people grow these, I personally do not but I see them everywhere around here. You might want to do a forum search on birds of paradise as well (at the top of the screen in little letters, click on forum search). Good luck and happy gardening! [grin]

Women and cats will do as they please. Men and dogs should relax and get used to the idea.

I have grown an orange one from seed.Hopefully it will bloom this year for me& have 4 more seeds to start as well.
This is what I CAN tell you.I grow my pot in shade in summer but it is like a bright shade(light from SE).I keep it watered& it is rooty so right now it actually needs a larger pot and have one for it to pop into soon.Right now I have mine growing in garage...kinda my cool greenhouse with hubbys florecent lights. It actually has 2 new leaves along with a few others growing out there.when we get those freeze temps I shut the garage door but most times it is open.Is a lady by sons school who has one growing in a 25 gal pot on her porch.she has a sheet over it and other things(imagiune are her corn plants as are not at end of driveway now)& I'm 1 1/2 hours from you heading north on 59 to 190.I'll ask my friend in houston about hers.i believe hers is inground.she lives south side.
