What dormant spray do you people use on your roses....I cut back and transplanted several this weekend! I have 15 of them...and hopefully if I do things right this year maybe I might have better luck.
Californians keep me posted when you do anything to your roses so I can follow.....you'll have to walk me through this!!! Last year was the first year I ever had roses and they don't like me very much!!!

I don't use anything on my roses. I pretty much ignore them except the occaisonal dead heading and pruning. Just feed them in the spring and summer.
My dad is a rose gardener extraordinare. I'll ask him what he does because his are always quite beautiful. I'll let you know his little secrets....

I'm sure your roses like you more than you know, they're probably just shy.
Talked to my dad and he doesn't do a dormant spray on his roses either. Just trim them down to a few canes in the winter (January) and wait for new growth. My stepmom puts coffee grounds around the bases of the roses and the day lillies once new growth starts. They have their roses surrounded by day lillies, it looks really pretty when they all bloom. She is a coffee fanatic and always has lots of fresh grounds for the garden.

Okay they were transplanted/trimmed about a week ago....watered in well....new growth is starting to come....Had stockpile of used coffee grounds and spread them around and lightly brushed them in. Anything else need to be done????
I need gardengal and all you rose people to help me out....if they don't turn out real well this year I am pulling all 15!!!! Don't get me wrong, I loooooooooooooove roses but last year I had rust/fungus. Sprayed them with some chemical for the previous but either I didn't do it frequently enough or something....they still produced but they sure weren't the best looking things around!!! So HELLLLLLLLLLLLLLLP ME pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeese!!!

I love roses too, but don't know much that could help you as I'm starting out with them myself this year.
One thing I do know is that you don't want to water them from above...the water on the leaves can cause problems...always water from the bottom base of the plant. That is what my dad always does and he doesn't do much else to keep them alive. I hope I will be so lucky this year when I start my first rose garden!

Catlover, Where are your roses planted? Do they get at least 6 hours of sun? What kind do you have? I'll try to help as much as I can but I am certainly not an expert rosarian.
Barb H., I've heard the watering tip before as well. I think its to help discourage the chances of mold and fungus growth. Mine get watered by sprinklers underneath, mostly on their trunks. I did plant one in a pot this year, will have to watch how I water it. Thanks for the reminder.
I fertilized everybody this weekend with a blended organic chicken fertilizer (fancy words for chicken poop). This is the first year I have done this, my dad does it all the time and he gets good results. I'll let you know if I see a difference.

Thanx Barb H. and gardengal....Most of the plants are in full sun for most of the day. The main reason I moved the others was because some were beginning to get too much shade from the dwarf lemon tree AND the back sprinklers were constantly hitting them. Why the previous owner planted them there I will never know! The others I always watered from below....but they still had some of the problems but not as much as the plants I transplanted. I think one of the reasons they are getting some of the diseases is because we have a lot of dew in the mornings thus keeping them wet during the night! The majority of them are Hybrid T's....there are a couple that I'm not sure of....they have lots of thinner stems and the flowers are very delicate and don't last very long before they start falling off?????? One is called Just Joey, another is Dolly Parton and I forgot the name of the 3rd one that was labeled. All the others don't have tags. Colors...several different colored red ones (some smell REALLY nice, white, yellow, orange, purple, peach (that's the just joey...smells terrific but the blooms don't last very long and are huge)and a white with a splash of red. Chicken poop huh....no source for that....hmmmm how about I use the fish emulsion???? I have compost tea I can stir up...would that work? Triple 15????
What about this epsom salt??? anybody use it and when? why?

Epsom salts are sprinkled about the base when your roses are blooming. They encourage new growth and more blooms. Don't use them now as they are sleeping but in the spring when new growth appears you can give them a dose to give them a boost.
And I think fish emulsion or compost tea would be just fine for them. Roses like iron and acid so any source will do.

Catlover, I did my roses on a couple of different weekends so the first pruned are starting to sprout a little. The last ones I did the last day in January so they are still sleeping. I would think pine needles would help. Just give the trunk some space, nothing too close to it.
