Author Garden: Dutch Iris & Bark Mulch ? avigil Gardener Member # 2615 posted                       I'm planning to plant Dutch Iris this fall. I remember my mother-in-law telling me that when she placed bark multch around her iris', they quit blooming. I normally use bark multch around everything! I can only imagine it's because of the high nitrogen content in bark multch. Is this true? Thanks for your help. Member # 772 posted                       Avigil, Not the nitrogen, they just don't like things on top of them or too wet.. They like their rhyzomes' on top of the dirt with the roots going into the dirt.. Nothing sprinkled on top of them either... (*I found that out the hard way when I first started gardening! ) I do know there is a bunch of gardeners here that grow them, and may also come thru and offer some info on them..... I do the same thing sometimes. I did that on one forum and everyone got so mad at me and said such awful things that I never went back there. It was not the kind of mistake that would have destroyed a garden, but sheesh, they were mad and I was new there. Oh well, live and learn!
