i was at a local college this morning and they had the most gorgeous black eyed susans. several had already been dead headed, several more had gone to seen and the rest were either beautifully opened, or somewhere between new bud and open.

my question is this: i grabbed a couple of the heads that had gone to seed. can i plant them for this season?

It depends on the type of rudbeckia. If it's a perennial one it probably won't flower this year, but the ones considered annuals or short-lived perennials will bloom this year if you get them started early enough.

Jiffy, this is early for black eyed susan in my neck of the woods. I would say if they've already bloomed this year, it's probably a perennial variety and they probably will be back again next year.
