i have a gardenia bush i bought on clearance last summer and it is fine in the pot it came in. but i was thinking about going ahead and putting it out. if i put it out now, how hard will it be to move it later if i decide where i have it isn't where i want it?

MY SISTER HAD A GARDENIA SHE PUT OUT IN THE YARD IN SOUTHER FLA, IT TOOK OVER THE YARD , GOT 10 FOOT TALL AND AS WIDE AND NEVER STOPPED BLOOMING. IT WAS TRULY A GORGEOUS THING. SO I WOULD IMAGINE THE GARDENIA PLANTED OUT IN OPTIMUM CONDITIONS WOULD DO THE SAME.

The one thing u must watch out for when moving gardenias (i know, because i had a problem with them this past summer) is disturbing the roots. If u are going to move a gardenia, it's best to do so when it's not so hot outside. May thru Sept would probably be a bad time to transplant gardenias in your zone.

Hey- as long as we're on the subject- I have a potted gardenia that a friend of mine gave me. It was doing bad when I first got it, but I have managed to nurse it back to some semblance of health. Now- what can I do to encourage it to bloom? I just love gardenia flowers!

well, what i thought was 1 gardenia bush turned out to be 2. so, i have these large matching pots that i am going to put them in beside my front porch (lots of sun) and see what happens. they are smaller than i thought, so... that should work. will keep you posted.

"The ideal temperature ranges would be 65 to 70 degrees during the day and 60 to 62 degrees at night."
What do you think about this? It gets much hotter than that here and cooler at night too. Should I try to work on my gardenia's or chalk it up to experience and plant other plants where they are?

Thank you Barley, for the info. I had no idea they were so picky. But I will try to meet my gardenia's needs if I can smell those blossoms one fine day!

I think I do need to move three of mine. They are green and healthy looking, but they are in too much shade. A good lesson in paying attention to where you put things in your garden. Thanks for the info.
