I seen a mandevillia vine at walmart and will be returning tomorrow for it& it will come home with me http://www.floridata.com/ref/M/mandev.cfm I'm planting it on my arbor behind pond to grow with some white hycanith vine& when the cannas bloom at arbor that are their will move them to new location(my #2 hobby...moveing plants)and move in some purple foliage ones with red flowers. I have weird question::::if i take a tomato cage and place in center of old wheelbarrel and plant soil around it do ya think is possible to root some mandevillia cuttings in thhis wheelbarrel and plant up around them as they grow.I got one that is decorated with christmas lights wonder how well hubby would be with storeing it in wheelbarrel till christmas?? I just wanna know if can root them while growing other stuff in wheel barrel with them.shoot if they don't look good I'll just move them anyway.I already decided my gurneys order will stay in conatiners till I decide I like them in spot.

I am hestitant sometimes of moving my plants, Can you walk me (and the other gardeners) through some of what you do to do them, and why you do it and why you have a #2 Hobby to do it???
I have heard about root systems~some not liked being up rooted or deep tap root systems, and leaving plants for 3 years, (they sleep, creep and leap)..
How do you do them when moving them? Have hole ready to move to?? Keep in containers, temp. beds (like the Gardening by the Yard guy on HGTV?? I think that guy, Paul James the Gardener Guy funny!!!)
Just walk us through some of the steps you would do? Or why you do? Lack of sun, or read up that there's too much sun? Lack of production?? Can you give some pointers as to why you move them? VERY CURIOUS!!!

Well when we moved here in feb a year ago not all the trees had all their leaves,so some was planted in full sun for feb-april then shade arrives.well some needed moved to get more sun.....some needed moved cause didn't like where they sat....some needed moved cause seen something else blooming and if I placed here could bloom with this or that color looks better with this plant...some are moved cause get in hubbys way TOO MUCH to survive for long.Yes I dig my hole 1st take some soil with it on shovel and walk it right over to new home.I water them just about daily for weeks afterwards when move& my roses get watered daily from March-Dec anyway.I have rooting hormone liquid I mix up and use to water them in and help them settle in fine& if in summer will shade with a cloth for a few days if they look wilty my rooting stimuator has V B1 added too.I use pine straw on them also so helps retain moisture& they eventually get cow manure sprinkled at base& some compost.sometimes i end up dropping off a wheelbarrel full of compostables and will load up a pile of compost to distribute about(like this morning....dug up spider lilys for my sis& loaded up a barrel of compost to drop off at camilia tree and dumped some cow manure B4and sprinkled last of bag of8-6-6 and will eventually make it for some pine straw over at lake, cause took wheel barrel down hill and down road a ways to powerlines for mayapples for renee& had some old man walking his dogs look at me strangely)I try not to transplant in july& august, but still have had sucess then also.I moved some bulbs and 2 dauntra then last year.bulbs were crinuim lilys& dauntra were not happy where they were some filled in blank spot in zinnias where the seeds washed down hill.oh and i did move a redbud tree.I'm watching for it to flower out,the power crews cut mine along fence so they will not be blooming if leaves look like crap will just cut the trees down...trashed all 3 of them.they look like crap&I didn't save seed cause thought were fine where they were.so will have to grow some else where in yard someday& be sure is 10 ft from powerline so they won't hack away.my yupon holly looks like crap too but someone said with the drastic haircut will be fuller now. That would be nice and believe me will be gaurding them in 5 years when they return to trim again. as to tap roots.....I read up 1st to see how far need to dig and if root trimming hurts any.i wouldn't mind moveing my camilia some like 6 ft further back so out from under oak tree so can get some more shade, but will do cuttings.I didn't get to buy 2 pink camilias cause someone went and bought everyone they had since I been yesterday.I'm mad.I had the $$ for them 2 and should have bought, but have excuse to go 50 miles now to real walmart.I also don't always move them at their best time to be moved.I'm going to try to use containers so less digging.peoney will go in container and sunk.i'm not sure where I want it yet

Njoynit, I think half of my problem is, I'm so packed with things and plants, I have no where's to move them to... So, I hesitate... I know somethings' need pulling, but where does it go from there... I hestitate about putting things in pots, as it's so cold up here, I have a huge experiment with some Japanese Iris' and Hardy Glad's and some asst. Lilies.. if they survived I'll be tickeled pink, if not a sad lesson to learn. But just no place. and it's not for the lack of area's as to how many area's I have plants, it's just I have so many that I just should stop! But I can't!!! Your husband sounds like mine does... I fired him from the weed whackin' because of it, and now I worry about spots I have my gardens in, "well, I wanna do this to that area and that with this area, and etc., etc." So, I"m limited in spaces and sun! I was going to ask if you got your mandevillia vine, guess not huh?? I hate that, can't make up your mind and then you come back and they're wiped out! Know that feelin'!
Thanks for the info on moving them and what you do.

He don't like veggies He don't like gardening. He calls all flowers weeds, bloom or not. This man probably regrets the day he bought me 73 rose bushes. My goal is more flowers less grass 2 acres. It takes me over 4 hours to mow...push mow....and it is very hot in july/august...even june& may for that matter.I DON"T let him mow.
He came home early.I was walking across the yard with a rose bush on shovel. It was in the hole & set before he was out of the car It was brought to my attention the yard needs mowed(gee I'm trying for some green compost here now& hes already mucking me up)never got the tomato plant moved either.I gotta do that 1st thing in morning.
PACK MY BAGS!! he has LOST IT.I moved plants in here in a boat& part of a old pop up camper& a few in the van.I have MORE PLANTS now.would need a u haul.I'll turn my hearing aide off

I asked him yesterday to buy me a liner for my wall basket( he got a good deal on that. $5 for a wrought iron hanging wall basket....he thought was a hanger for pots& pans for the kitchen) .Hes going to lowes& home depo today at lunch tme for house stuff.walmart don't have a liner for basket thats 14 inches and a wall basket.I DID make him a chocolate cake with chocolate iceing.so we are HOPEING.plus was bad today already.he gave me $$ to pay satilite in town....so stopped at walmart for 2 bags pine bark nuggets& potting bed mix& grabbed 3 packs of seeds, nicotina and velvet queen sunflowers.I could have looked at more seeds if they didn't have a pallet of charchoal in front of display.all their mandevilla vines are gone.I seen mexican palms for 16.97.sure wish someone would buy me 2 of them Well have 4 minutes left time to plant my soaking gurneys order out& is a big orange yellow spot heading my way so if can get them in fast enough I won't have to water Weezie if you moved here you'd probably have my problem. Its too easy to overwinter plants here, plus no snow, but I got room 2 acres, lots of exercise& work.am lucky have pool also cause when mowing I hop in every 15 minutes.but then look at jillie.perfect calif weather, course not alot of rain(usually)and am sure she has got my electric bill beat& water too boot. gotta go by time to get dirty some more.i got du=irty at walmart.bags wet& heavy from rain

Njoynit....I just got 3 of those mandvillia vines....2 bright pink and one light pink....I'm glad you posted that link because it says the other name and that is the one I knew it as...the dipl...name. They are only about 3 ft tall and I have them intertwining on a chain link fence by my RV garage.....the blossoms are beautiful. They say they are easy to propogate....so I will have to give it a try!!!!
Hey did you end up with enough money for the satellite bill??? Don't dig a hole to deep...the hubby may bury you in it if he finds out you bought more plants!!!! J/K Catlover

There are 2 different kinds of plants being sold as Mandevilla Vines. One is actually vining, and the other has slightly smaller flowers and is more upright with branches but don't really vine. I know this because I bought a few of the latter at Home Depot a few years ago and returned them when I realized it wasn't going to vine around the trellis I had planted it on. Of course the label only said "Mandevilla". I think it was the second variety you mentioned that started with "dipl..."

I purchased mine at the do it center...so far it is trying to wrap itself in the chainlink....will the bush one do this as well? I really want it to climb the fence! Hope I got the right one.....I will have to go take a look at what the tag says again....and report back. I hope it is the right one....I just love the flowers. Catlover

It sounds like you got the right one, if it's trying to wrap itself around the chainlink! The other one really has a more stiff branch that I had difficulty twining around the trellis and definitely did not want to vine itself.
