hi, i recently acquried 4 boston fern, i have never had any luck keeping them alive, i was told that if you put 1 t. of ammonia to a gal. of water that will keep them thriving, but, i am afraid i will kill them, so if anyone can tell me what to do and if i can use ammonia or not i would be greatly appreciative, thank you lyndee

Adding various potions to the soil is never the answer to plant problems. Ammonia has lots of nitrogen in it and plants do use nitrogen. However, there is more than enough nitrogen in the potting soil. Don't use ammonia on your plants.

Boston ferns must be close to a window where they get a few hours of direct sun and indirect sun for the rest of the day. Water them thoroughly as soon as the soil feels nearly, but not quite dry.

If you get the light and watering right, then you will not have to be concerned with anything else.
