I jhave a stalk of lucky bamboo that is about 8" long, and only has a few leaves coming ut of the top of the plant.
Can I take a cutting, say the top 2", put it in some water and have it root? will the bottom 6" grow new leaves?
Also, I am very afraid to put it in soil. i have heard good and bad things about it. Have most people had success with it?

Yes, you can go ahead and cut the stalk and it will root. I did this for one of my lucky bamboos and so did my daughter, and both plants are doing fine. Use a sharp knife to make a clean cut, and make sure that at least one node is under water.
There's also no problem putting them in soil - my two bamboos have been planted for a few months and they're doing great !
