Hello - I'm new.
I was wondering if someone out there had any bright ideas how I might get rid of LOADS of big big weeds with huge roots,in an area of around 20 metres x 20 metres, (without using chemicals), in preparation for laying turf.
i.e. would burning them work?
would I have to machine the whole top layer off, etc?
Help please!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi Janey,

I have to deal with the same situation u r referring to each time i build a new home (i'm a builder). Usually i don't worry about the weeds too much. I bring in a New Holland (front loader), and he moves the dirt around for me. I just rake up the weeds and roots afterward. I pile them up. Usually, the weeds die, or if they r dry u can burn them or bag them up and haul them off to with the trash.
U might need to rent a tiller and till up this area of land. Afterwards, take a rake and smooth out the dirt and rake out the weeds and roots. I'm not sure what kind of weeds u have or how intrusive they are. Dandelions always come to my mind. I hate those things.
Also, certain grasses can compete very well with most weeds. I'm from a warmer climate than u;so, i really don't know what u can grow. I have a warm season grass (centipede) and it does quite well in choking out most weeds if it's growing well.
Not sure what i said will make any sense to u. Good luck with your yard! [Smile]
