Ash I have been reading about the Japanese Knotweed it sounds worse than my problem with the evil Burmuda grass and the Purslane. I found a website that might help. www.nps.gov/plants/alien/fact/pocu1.htm Hope this helps. If it were me I would try Round Up. On this site it tells % to use and how to do apply it. Good Luck and keep us informed. Is this weed common in England? Catlover Karen

thanks for the help ill go over there straight away and have a look.
as far as i know the knotweed was sold as an oriental plant for quite some time before people realised what it did. since we found out about it we have noticed it more and more around the countryside

I've never heard of Japanese Knotweed but i'm intersested in looking it up. Like catlover, bermuda grass seems to be the only pest for me (just in a small area). They sell this "matting" material that u put on the surface and it is supposed to keep the weeds from growing thru, but still allow water to pass thru it... well, it doesn't work for bermuda grass. It grew right thru it! I finally got tired of fooling around and bought some roundup. That did the trick. Then i mulched that particular bed heavily. Hard to believe people sod their yard with bermuda! (i know there are different varieties). Good luck with your problem weed. There are some beautiful gardens in England. Would love to visit there someday! Love their parks. Gardendreamer03@aol.com

i really hope you two can sort out the bermuda grass problem. the site that catlover gave me was really helpful, it also had some links to look at that helped.
a brief rundown of JK would be that it drys up all the soil around and underneath its stems, and then puts shoots into other areas. i have read somewhere that it can even grow through concrete
(im not a gardener so please excuse if my terminology is not exact)
i will keep you all updated on how things go but i think itll take some time
