Hi Everyone, This is my first day here and I love it already. New at gardening, so can anyone tell me whether or not I can gather seeds from my Lantana to replant next year? And if so, words of advice on how-to would be much appreciated! Thanks! IowaNovice

i just saw that you are from fortdodge we are neighbors!!! i am in titonka that is just north of algona. i was born in fort dodge as were two of my children. nice to meet you. you will love this site.
Maybe we can compare notes on what grows and what doesn't around here! Nice to meet you too! I know exactly where Titonka is, I was born and raised in West Bend and lived in Algona for a couple of years in the 70's. I fell in love with Lantana when I lived in Florida, so am growing some here this year. It is a perennial down there, and SO beautiful. I want to try it from seed, but don't know for sure how to dry them...guess will try it anyway.
Thanks, Glenda (IowaNovice)

Welcome from another neighbor. I am in Iroquois, SD (right east of Huron). I am in Zone 4. I would be approx 5 hours from you. I'll bet that you and Iowa Dalhia go to the Tulip Fest. I want to try to get there next spring! What a feast for the eyes (and nose!) that has to be! You'll have to let me know what the dates are!

I went to the Tulip Festival in Orange City for the first time this year! My brother and family live there. Have not been to the one in Pella tho. It really is fun! And the tulips, of course are beautiful! My sister-in-law is going to get me some tulip bulbs when they give them away. They dig them up every year and replant marigolds and such in town, so they give away the bulbs. Don't know what they'll be until they come up in the spring, but I'm sure it will be fun waiting to see what they are! Seeing your name, just have to ask, do you do the Sturgiss thing each year? And isn't that going on right now? Nice to meet you!

yes you can save the seeds, they are the green dots that are in place of the flowers when flowers are done blooming they will turn brown then can pick off and save for next year.I'd pick and lay to dry in cup for a week then put in air tight container.sow when ground temp stays bout 70 and will sprout right up.....OR you could dig plant up and pot up and water once a week and let it look shabby and trim back in spring& pot back out to enjoy some real soil.I have the yellow& forgot to start my yellow/pink seeds this year with move and all so in spring can tell ya if seeds last that long
* * * * I will age ungracefully until I become an old woman in a small garden..doing whatever the Hell I want!

where did you go to school at? i grew up in bode. it really is a small world. not to sound stupid but i'm not really sure what lantana is, but as with any seed i think you just dry them and store them in an air tight container.

Njoynit, thanks so much for the advice. The plants are big enough, that I may not keep them, but there are a lot of seeds on them and still blooming. They were tiny little things when I got them this year and got them rather late because I know how they love the hot weather. They really sprouted! I have the red and yellow mixture (sort of like a Dallas Red) and the Cherry red. No yellow tho, maybe we could swap some seeds this year. Thanks again!

Iowa Novice~ I do go to the Sturgis rally every year. My 1st bike was a 97 HD Sportster and I now ride a '94 HD Fatboy. I will be ordering a '04 Fatboy this year. They came out with purple and that was all that it took!!! I had a wonderful neighbor that came over everyother day to take care of my plants for me. I think they look even better than when I left!!!! Iowadalhia and I have quite a chat going on in Hello from Iowa. We've had a bunch of Sturgis chats!

A good friend of mine who lives in Sioux City bought a 2002 FXDWG, black, while I lived in Florida. Since moving back a year ago I've only gotten to ride on it ONCE! Maybe he's not such a good friend after all? LOL! Where would I go to look for your "Hello from Iowa" chat?

What kind of a friend is that?!!! I have a lot of people ask me to give them a ride on my bike, but I just can't do it. I'm a very small person and most people that would ride with me would be much bigger and I think it would throw off my balance! My new bike is going to have a solo seat!!! Do you go to Algona over the July 4th weekend for their biker bash?

Just called the chamber of commerce office to see if they had set the dates yet. It will be May 20-22 in 2004. I would recommend it to anyone and if you want to see more about it go to http://www.octulipfestival.com They don't have next year's schedule on there yet, but will eventually and you can always check out this year's schedule to see what it is about.
IowaNovice P.S. Haven't been to the Algona bash, maybe next year?

I haven't been to Algona yet either. It is at a bad time for my husband and me. Haying and spraying!!! One of these years. I talked to my mother-in-law and have made reservations at the Orange City Super 8!!!! It is the only hotel that showed availability in my system (i'm a travel agent) so I nabbed them right away! I think my 2 sister-in-laws and 2 nieces will join us. It is only a 3 hour drive from where we are at. Here I am already planning next year!

Great! I'll be at the tulip festival again this year for sure. My daughter would like my grandson to go with my sister-in-law (who's an OC native) in traditional dress and help sweep the streets for the queen's court. It's really a kick! The men and bigger boys come along and dip water out of horse/cow tanks lining the street and throw it on the street, then the women, girls, and little ones come along with brooms and sweep it off. My grandson likes to sweep and he loves to wear his wooden shoes we bought him, so I think he'll be a natural! He's 18 mos right now. My nephew marches in the band and will be in high school this year. They have a FABULOUS marching band and they march in wooden shoes! It's a sight to hear and see! There is one particular house there that has a backyard garden full of all sorts of tulips that you can tour, and then you can order bulbs also. I'm sure you will enjoy it all! We'll have to make sure and solidify plans to meet up there.
Have a good day! IowaNovice

Well, I'll be showing up on Friday the 21st of May and will be there all day on Saturday. Talk about making plans in advance!!! One thing I've learned is that if you procrastinate, you just never get it done! I am the Queen of Procrastination! I've had plans to get certain things done all summer and have done about 1/2 of them. Sadly summer is slipping away from us way too fast. I need to put a bunch more miles on my bike before I pack it up for good!
