I've just been told that the Siberian Squills (scilla siberica) bulbs are poisonous . Is it the flowers or the bulbs? Just how bad is it? Is it a keeper or a throw away? Please help soon, I was going to plant them this weekend.

tamara, Here's alot of good info on it, some good pointers. I would imagine...that you aren't going to eat the bulbs when you plant them, are you??? I would also imagine a good hand washing after planting them, but that should be good enough. Mostly other animals, that would dig up bulbs will stay away from such bulbs. I have them, I don't think I ever read that about them, but alot of plants are we'd never even think about. If you have kids, which I do, and mine have never made an attempt to eat them or touch them...and my kids are THE nosiest in the world. So, just keep that in mind that they are, and not worry too much about them. I've had them for at least 6 years now, and are very hardy, and they do naturalize nicely!!! Just leave the flowers on and there's little seeds that form at them and when they fall over, that's where the new baby plant will be next year. They are very pretty..... Such a joy to see in the spring. Weezie
The only problem I've ever incountered with bulbs are, they are spring flowers, and do wonderfully well obviously in the spring, but come the time to die out and come mid summer there's a big hole or brown area where you can't plant anything because the bulbs and babies are there..... So, hence bare spots. But, if you find some little garden art or statues, just when they are allllll done and there's no more evidence of them, stick some thing over them, you'll know where they are and you won't have the urge to plant there and cut into the bulbs...... which is so infuriating!! because, I hate to do that. But pull off what ever you've put on come fall time, so they can get some water to their roots.
I hope some of this info helps!! Weezie

Thanks Weezie, I don't plan to eat the bulbs but I do have a private child care service in my home and I just want to make sure that it is not the plant itself that is poisonous. Thanks.

The children do not play exactly where they will be planted but they have been known (much to my dismay) to pull out some flowers to take home to mom or gram. I have learned that cosmos seem to be there flower of choice along with my painted daisies. Next year we will plant a cutting garden just for them to pluck.
Squill (Scientific Name: Scilla spp) is a highly toxic plant. In California, it is rated number 1 in toxicity. Plants rated 1 may cause serious illness or death. If ingested, immediately call the Poison Control Center or your doctor.

Thanks for all the info. After reading the lists I am just astonished at how many poisonous plants that are sold with no warning. I am also wondering how I managed to survive after eating choke cherries all my life seriously we eat them by the handfuls.

Tamara, Me too!! I ate buttercups and may apples, daisy's, and the red berries (some) of the elderberries........ (I just learned that like a couple of weeks ago, something I was reading, and I almost fell over, because we always were in a hurry to eat them...) So, I guess that explains why I am the way I am!! Go figure! Weezie
