Well, try as I may....I just can't seem to get a picture to post again....and I thought it might help you to understand what I was trying to explain.

I think, depending on how the branch broke off, that you could try to regraft it back to the main plant abyss.

You will have to make new cuts....on both peices, so that there will be close contact and good union.

At the base of the branch make a sloping cut 1 1/2 inches long. Cut a tongue or a lip two thirds up the cut and about 1/2 inche long.

Make corresponding cuts in the rootstock...so the two pieces will fit together.....like a tongue and grove. Slide the two sections together and make sure the edges are aligned.

Bind the graft with grafting tape and seal any edges with grafting wax that you can get at the larger gardening centers. The union should take in about 4-6 weeks.

Good luck

abyss,
I don't know if this idea would save it on the tree itself but there's a item in the Lee Valley Tools ( www.leevalleytools.com )
and it has rooting pots on it. You clamp it around the tree where it's been broken (or you broke it on purpose for the purpose of starting a new item) stuff some dirt or potting medium in it, cover with a black label and in a few weeks, 6 to 8 or something like that, some roots should appear.
Cut it off the original plant and plant it in the ground as long as you see new or white roots......

Like I said it may not save it on the tree but at least it might save it to have a seperate tree???

Just an idea???
