Hi Carole,
Gather up a cup or two of what you consider to be typical of your soil. Remove any twigs and rocks that are bigger than a BB. Moisten the soil until every particle is wet. Squeeze it all into a big mud ball. Let it set until it just begins to dry out, then try to crumble it. Generally, a sandy soil will separate almost completely. Loamy soil will come apart in small chunks. Clay soil won't crumble much at all... it stays in a lump.

You should also get a soil pH test from a nursery ($5-$10) so you have an idea of whether you have alkaline or acid soil! Many plants are far more fussy about the soil pH than about the soil tilth (texture).

Soil pH

pH requirements for fruits and veggies

There are many more tests that you can run on your soil, but these two are by far, the most important to consider.

Is it clear as mud to you now?
