My sweet basil has been in the ground for less than 24 hours, and once again, is being devoured by slugs!

I'm looking for an effective slug solution that isn't toxic and won't affect the taste of the herbs. I've tried the beer solution suggested on this site before with poor results. Does anyone have experience with slug traps? I've also been advised that slivers of Irish Spring soap placed around the plants will deter the little buggers, but I'm hesitant to try this for fear that I'll end up with Irish Spring-flavored basil. Any ideas?

Slugs are aweful. Some people use used coffee grounds and crushed egg shells to deter slugs. I have used coffee grounds and they seem to work but you have to keep adding fresh. Hope this helps.

HI! SLUGS...those nasty critters! I have tried many things, but I have found that Ortho makes "Bug-Geta" Slug & Snail Killer that works wonders! You can get this at any garden center, Lowes, Home Depot or wherever Ortho products are sold. They also make "Bug-Geta Snail, Slu & Insect Killer Plus" which kills cut worms & other pests which harm your plants, but I have not been able to find this product yet as it is so new to the market. You can probably check out www.Ortho.com & read up on it first. Good luck!

Hi Julesagogo
Just a word of caution on any snail and slug bait you use. It is very hazardous to children and pets. One pellet can cause severe problems. Used to work in a vet. hospital and many animals came in that were poisoned with these type of products and it is not a pretty sight to say the least. Animals as well as humans suffer greatly and could work its way through the food chain. Just please, please be careful! Heard about putting bait in a old soda bottle that the upper third is cut off and reversed into itself and bait placed inside. Tape the two together so it can't be taken apart. Can't hurt to try. Sorry I sound unraveled but like I said it is VERY dangerous stuff and a lot of suffering involved. Good Luck with your slug problem. Concerned Catlover

If your worried about the slug bait affecting the plant itself just place the bait away from the plant but scattered in other places in your garden. Slugs are transient and sooner or later will run into it. The slugs will never go away (just like aphids),but they can be controlled.

I would never use any type of commerical chemical on my garden. I have used wood ash, sprinkled around plants having problems with sluggs, the slugs will not cross over this. It does need to be reapplyed after a rain or watering. And a hard wood ash works better then soft woods.
