I was given a hygrangea for Mothers day and would like to plant in my flower bed. Does anyone know if it will survive? I live in central Florida.

Flowerbelle,
Not only will it survive, it should do very well. In my experience (I'm from Pensacola originally), hydrangeas are very easy to grow. The acidity in the soil will determine the color of the flowers (blue or pink or something in between) and once they are started, they are definitly hardy plants. One word of caution: Plant it where you want it to stay - once they are fully established, they are practically impossible to move. I tried to move one that had outgrown its place and ended up giving up and leaving it. (I broke 2 shovel handles trying to did it up!) good luck and enjoy it, they are one of my favorite flower plants.

Thanks Jiffy. They are my most favorite too. I tried some when I lived in Louisiana and they just died. I'm going to plant my new one this weekend.

Hi,
If it is one of those hydrangeas that are manufactured, I doubt if it will survive. If it is from a nursery it will. Those beautiful hydras that are plentiful at mums day are very decorative but I have Never had any luck with maintaining them after a snow fall... not a hardy gene...sorry

Hi Stacey,
I planted my hydrangea last week and so far so good, it hasn't keeled over YET. I believe this did come from a grocery store so it may not last long. If it doesn't then I'm afraid I'll have to go to a nursery and get a good one. I've wanted a hydrangea for so long and I'm bound and determined that I'm going to have one. Thanks for your reply I really appreciate it.

I just purchased 2 hydrangeas about 2 weeks ago.....they have both been planted, and yes they were from one of those super stores and not a nursery.....one of them seems to be doing really well, the other one has quite a few yellow leaves appearing on it, but at the same time I still see what appears to be new growth.......I want to make it better, and I really hope that it will live....I hate to watch a plant die....

ok ya'll, both of my current hydrangeas are from wally world and are living in spite of my neglect. the only thing i did to them was repot (I don't want to set them out until i am sure where i want them to go) into a pot of similar size to what they were in. The only real difference is that the pot has an attached saucer. i have had mine for 2 1/2 months and they are just fine. only problem is no more flowers. good luck and enjoy.
