I,ve been using coffee grounds along with dried leaves, kitchen scaps, blood meal & soil in my compost. Today when I turned it, there was an ammonia odor. Does anyone konw why or how to correct the problem or even if this IS really a problem. I don't want to use this if it's going to kill my plants! Thanks for any advice. I don't think it's really a problem. Ammonia is a natural chemical. My compost has a vast array of odors, and ammonia is one of the phases it goes through. Keep turning it so it can move out of the ammonia phase and into the rest of the rotting procedure.
I hear that not ALL table scraps are good to use. Meaty things don't break down very well. Egg shells and veggie scraps are best.
Good for you for doing that healthy direct recycling!
