I had a problem this summer that I've never encountered before. The first plants to go were the jalapeno pepper plants, and they went QUICK! There is a thin, white thread, looking stuff in the dirt around it, along with some of the white stuff at the crown or base of the plant. It did not kill all my plants. Only certain ones. Ornamental & vegetable. From what I've read in my gardening books, I think this is 'southern blight'. Has anyone had any experience with this, and what, if anything, can I do....I was told that I would just have to quit planting certain plants til it gets out of the soil. But I hate the thought of not planting my beloved tomatoes next year....Thankyou....jan

Soilborne fungi are the most difficult to control. If possible, dig up and despose of infected soil. Or try solarizing your soil by laying a sheet of clear plastic over the moistened area and letting the sun "cook" the soil for a few weeks.
Plant resistant or tolerant cultivars of tomatoes such as "Saturn" or "Venus".
