Hi, all. New poster from just north of Toronto Canada, zone 4b or 5ish, originally from Gulf Coast. I have no idea what grows in Canada -- the plants I enjoyed in my backyard back home are greenhouse plants here, it seems.
My problem: neighbour kids! They seem to regard my yard as a whoop n' holler playground. To make matters worse, they have stolen lawn furniture and broken it etc. I have spoken to their parents, to no avail. Nice people, just not really in control of their kids, who are under 11 or so. I don't want to get police involved or do anything nasty; I just want to enjoy my yard in peace. So far both kids and parents have been oblivious to my request to leave my stuff alone and respect the lot boundary. They say, "Oh, of course!" and nothing happens. Yow.
So, question: Is there a plant I could use to cover an inexpensive fence that would...deter, shall we say, these kids? I don't want to hurt them...just make climbing the fence too much trouble. I'd like something that has stickers or thorns but no berries that might encourage the kids to approach. Also, I'd like a really fast grower, as I've a good piece of fence to cover, about 100 feet or so. Flowering would be nice but not essential.
So, northern growers, any suggestions? I would SO appreciate it! Thanks, jean

Ajpor, Sorry I live in Southern California I have no idea what kind of plants to use. If it were me the first thing I would install is an electric fence especially if they were stealing my things. I might even be tempted to booby trap the yard. Maybe kids swinging upside down from a tree for awhile is in order. Sounds like the parents need some parenting classes or a good paddle to use on the kids behinds. Good Luck and let us know what you decide to do. Curious catlover, Karen

Hi Jean, short of calling the cops on your neighbours, you could plant some hawthorn bushes, that'll teach 'em good, lol! Not a climber, but bushy enough that they'd end up in them at some point.

When we moved in we saw some privit seperating us from our neighbors. They are nice but noisey. My husband wanted to trim the privit down low so that we could all see each other. I convinced him that he should let it grow up to the sky if it would. 5 years we are here and privit was one of the best things about this property. And yes we do all get along with our neighbors. However, they are truly over there and we are all the way over here. Just the way we like it. You may want to get yourself some wonderful, private and carefree privit.
