I want to plant a flower garden under a very mature maple tree. What would grow best there? It get almost full sun after about 2-3 p.m. I want to plant the garden facing the west.

I have some hosta. Will that work?

Hosta will probably do fine. Just be sure not to plant ones that are blue since they need more shade. Those that are are bright green or have some white should be fine. Just as an FYI - the more white on a hosta, the more sun they can take.
