I live in southern CA and have a small triangle plot of dirt that has poor drainage right near the house in full sun. The other two sides are sidewalk. Most of the flowers have died because of the poor drainage. The area is too small to put in drainage ditches or for a soakaway. I have read about raised beds but heard that is bad to do near a house.
Any suggestions? please help! thanks

How about trying some bog type plants? Plants that like moister conditions. Remember though, to water them well in dry spells. Choose plants like Calla Lily, Iris, Monkey flower, or Globe flower.

Good luck

I live in SC and have to deal with the hard red clay. It's work everytime i plant something because i have to dig a huge hole and discard the nasty clay. I always put in its place prepared soil that i buy by the pick up truck load.
It sounds to me that when it rains,u r saying that the water has nowhere to go.
Being a builder, I know u can cut thru the side walk , put in a drain pipe, then pour the side walk back. I know, it's hard work!! That still may not help u...
