I have a magnificant old sycamore on the west end of my house, and I want to build an attached garage beside and partly underneath of it. the garage plus driveway would probably cover 1/3 to 1/2 of the area under the canopy of the tree -- and so the tree would have less area for getting water. Would this harm the tree? Also, would future growth of the tree destroy the foundation of the garage?

I don't know the answer to your question but would think an arborist might know I just don't know if the roots are close to ground level or more down if roots are low would think would be ok but you'd want to know how far from trunk of tree garage should be so as not to cause damage and then hope your tree never falls on garage
