I have 2 date palms in an ideal location for them, however any flowers I plant around them (exception: alyssum and verbenia) die off, including pansies, petunias, snapdragons, etc....The soil conditions should be ideal, and the flowers get regular fertilizer. Has anyone had this problem or know if the palms do something to the soil? Many thanks!

Hi and welcome to The Garden Helper srsumter.

Of all the locations in the US that Date Palms wil grow....California is the best. However....you should keep the surounding area weed and flower free. These plants are native to the deserts of the Middle East and do not tolerate moist soils that are needed to maintain the flowers planted there.

They don't grow naturally in areas that receive 65 inches of rain each year, most of it during the warmest months. Where they are native, they get 20 - 40 inches of rain per year which falls in winter. Summers are hot and dry, with low humidity.

References state that you should water the palm when you first plant it....and may never have to water it again.

Good luck
