We were thinking about planting one of these....the dwarf weeping burgundy variety, on the north side of your house..
It receives late afternoon sun. Is this a good location to plant one?
Thanks much! Greg

I have read that Japanese maples are OK in the sun but that hot afternoon sun can burn leaves. Being on the north side of the house, the 'late afternoon sun' must be really late, which should be OK.

My question: I transplanted a 3' Japanese maple last summer, early summer, watered it daily though the NE drought and it has appeared fine this spring - but yesterday I notice that the leaves seem quite wilted. Does it need water daily, still? in its second year?

Also there is a cobweb and one little branch with no leaves - what spray/powder should I get for this culprit?
Thanks -

I also planted a small japanese maple fall and babied it. This spring we had a cold rainy snap and my leaves wilted and are now drying up. While the tree itself is still alive, I am expecting it to die. As far as the cobweb, I have no idea. I guess we both just have to hold our breath to see if they make it.

I think, Kat, that the cold snap probably just killed the leaves, not the tree, and that the tree may well grow new leaves. keep your eyes open for signs of life.

As to the original question: I understand that if it is in a position somewhat protected from strong winds, it should be okay.
