I live close to the coast in Los Angeles. Often damp air, mild temperatures. My question: I found an old what I call "brown" onion in one of Dad's cabinets. It had sprouts and roots coming out all over. For the heck of it, I planted it in an old specially soiled and fertilized garden Dad had made about 10 years ago. Now I have a beautiful green plant, with a flower or seed pod about 2 & 1/2 feet tall. Is this a flower or seed pod? Can I replant these seeds and grow onions? Just for fun and gardening.
Hehe, but I seem to have a green thumb.
Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. Happy Gardening to all and May God Bless Don H.

Don H., How's the flower on your onion? Did it continue to flower and still growing?
Far as I know, they wouldn't seed though until the following year.
I did the same thing you did....sort of.... I had a pot with dirt in it in my backroom that I wanted to throw in the compost and also another day or two later I had two onions that I wanted to go there a put them on top of the dirt to go out and not always going to the compost every day.... Well, something got set on top of it and totally forgot about the dirt (and onions) to go to the c.pile and one day clearing out the backroom of all the debris I found the two onions had sprouted a little green nib at the top and so I just took them out side and left them near the c. pile......Well, I tell you I got the prettiest white flower that comes out of an onion (very similiar to that of the ornamental alliums grown.) I didn't collect the seed or anything..... But I wouldn't see why it wouldn't work..... Give it a try. You'll never know without trying.............

Thanks Weezie, The flower on the onion is till growing, opening, is very white with small tiny yellow sprouts coming up from each small white "bud". It is very pretty. Thanks so much for the "onion" sites also.
I will experiment, see what I can grow of this, and let you all know what becomes of my first vegetable flower garden experiment :-)
Thanks again, Don

Don H., I grow the ornamental alliums. They are huge, purple round puffs of flowers........ They are soooooooooo pretty, now every year because I let them go to seed, the bulb becomes smaller and smaller. It saps the energy from the bulb to produce the seeds. I let mine naturally reseed in the garden and it's like baby fine grass growing up all around the mamma plant. Saving the seed may take certain requirements (ie; storage, cold temp. before trying to plant, etc.) I am not sure.... Did I send that info too?? Each type of seed has different requirements..... Good luck with the 'experiement' Weezie
