we always had a plant we called bachelor buttons, but it wasn't the blue flower i see when i do a search. it is a plant that grows similar to monkey grass but the "bloom" is a compact little white flower taht is no bigger than a med size shirt button. Any clues on what this is??? I would like to get some!

Liz, your baby's breath is gorgeous. Boxmonkey, your pictures are great. Weezie, I agree they are all beautiful

BUT - [Frown] not it [Frown]

the best way to describe it to you is the clumps grow like monkey grass, but the blades are much shorter and finer. the flowers are on long single stems with no leaves and the flower heads are like the inside of a mum only very tiny and very very compact. not at all soft or even soft looking. almost bright white on green stems with green grass. the stems are no bigger around than a wire coat hanger if that big and about 6-8 inches long.

Thanks for your help!

so I'm guessing that i'm off on the flower and close on the foliage?
Do you remember that time of year that it bloomed
area that it grew in? wet? Dry?
was it like a crocus or a flowering rush?

this is fun!

they are just finishing blooming now. you are right on the foliage. the ground around them is fairly high & dry, but the area is like all of the southeast, not far from the water table. sandy soil. bright light, not sure if it is full sun or not. gotta check on that. there is a trailer not far (5-6 miles) that has a few growing beside it. the grass clumps are like daylilies or monkey grass, but finer and lower leaves/fronds.
I really appreciate the help in searching for this!

Nope, none of the above. not in the corn flower category at all. flowers are white (never seen any other color). clumps of grass have thin, narrow blades that are about 2-3 inches long. liz got close with one of the sites in the foliage part.

right color, wrong shape. the flowers remind me in shape, of the chocolate non-pariels (sp?). almost like a super miniature mum head. very hard and just under 1/2 inch in diameter.

Liz, I think the latin name for the one i was looking for is Lachnocaulon minus and it is a relative of the one you found.

excellent! bog button was my next guess (lachnocaulon anceps) or another close relative is (eriocaulon septangulare) pipewort all members of thr pipewort family (eriocaulaceae) and the button part would really fit into you puzzle!
