I just moved to a house with two huge forsythias growing by the bedroom windows. My problem is that every time we have a strong wind at night, my daughter is terrified of the branches smacking the window. Everything I've read says that forsythia should be pruned in the spring. Is there something I can do now to keep the branches still in the wind? Tree wrap, perhaps? I don't want to damage the plants.

Thanks a lot,

excitykid, now happily moved to a farm

welcome excitykid! I don't have your answer, but wanted you to know that someone will come along and give it to you. they always do.
What I would guess would work though would be the netting that you would use to keep birds out of fruit trees. I would put that over them then secure it enough to contain the branches. either that, or it would figure out a way to brace the limbs in question to make them bend away from the window (maybe like you see the newly planted trees with the anchor ropes on them). either way, good luck and let us know what you end up doing!!

Tieing them should help out a lot. Even if some of the limbs break, it shouldn't hurt them.
About pruning, DO NOT prune until after they bloom. You can trim them back a good bit. They are pretty tough, as you well know, living in Utah. Good Luck [Smile]
