I am "gardening challenged" and have a question for the experts! I have a jade plant that I think needs to be repotted. In addition, it has grown so large that I can no longer lift it, and would like to split it in two and repot two plants. Is this a bad idea? If it isn't, exactly how should I go about it? Is there a technique that will minimize the danger of jade plant fatality? Thanks for your help.

joanh, welcome to the garden helper. Jade plants are very forgiving and can easily be propagated. what I would do and have done is this... pick a couple of the mid to large "branches" and sever them with a clean, sharp knife. stick the cut end into a pot the size you want your new plant. make sure the potting soil dries out between watering. you should see new growth in about a week to 10 days. especially if you place it in bright light. After you have successfully rooted some "babies" from your original plant, then you can experiment with the division of it without fear of losing it.

Dividing jade plants is very challenging and I don't recommend it.
I also don't believe that yours needs a larger pot.
If your plant is too large, then pruning is the answer. You can prune off as much as you like and it will not damage it, although it will alter its appearance. It's a lot like cutting hair.
New growth will start to come in just below the point on any stem where you make your pruning cut. The pruning not only makes the plant smaller, it will also make it fuller.
As Jiffymouse has suggested, you can propagate all of the cuttings and get lots of new plants.
