I have a parlor palm that has been in my family for 23 years. The problem is the stalks or stems are very skinny in some places and normal in others. If I was to cut it back at the skinny parts of the stem, do you think the plant would come back? Does anyone know what would cause this problem?
thanks

Linda, Welcome to the TGH Forum.

I can't answer your question, but, wait, other members will come along soon. Are the thin stems from the base of the plant? How long are the leaves? 1-1/2 to 2 feet?, 2-1/2 to 3 feet? Houseplant or outdoor plant?

Varieties:
Chamaedorea elegans
Chamaedorea eliator
Chamaedorea fragrans
Chamaedorea obongata

In the meantime, here's a link for others to see:

[wayey] Hello Linda Faye, [wayey]

I personally do not grow them, so I can't help
you either, but I know others will swing through
and offer some advise....

I'd like to Welcome you to The Garden Helpers Forum. [clappy] We have a great bunch of gardeners here who are very helpful and great to chat with.

But I just wanted to say, that that's a loooooong time to have a plant, WOW!! What dedication!!!
Keep up the good work...

While you wait for someone to help you with your question, Bill, our Head Gardening Guru of this site has about 8 listings in his site about Parlor Palms. If you do a GARDEN SEARCH and type in Parlor Palms, *(all open forums) 8 should come up for you to click and read up on............
Happy reading...

Hope some of this helps!!!
Weezie

You should be able to thin out some of the weaker stalks.....but only a third of them. Fertilize monthy during active growth. This is best done in the spring.

Good luck

Hi Linda,

I am confused by your description of stems that are thin at some points, but not at others. Can you post a photo here or e-mail one to me at my address below.
