I have this jade that was drooping over and dying, generally just not doing well.

It's real small I got a new growth piece from a friend at the end of spring and it has grown to about 6"

Many of the leaves got attacked by my cats. I just love the little darlings [devil]

Some leaves are turning black on the ends, like rotting. I don't beleive it's over watering it has been over 2 weeks since I've watered, and it had been 3 the time before that.

I am trying to root a new one from some of the leaves so that if it dies I will still have a plant, I have tried everything for rooting these things. I've laid the leaf on top of the soil, top up and bottom up, I've buried it in the soil, top up and bottom up. I've planted it in the soil. The leaves just sit in the soil and rot. It is driving me crazy!!!!!!!!!

Please what can I do to get one of these to root, can I save this plant?

sc, i think that you are using soil that is too moist. I'll think more on it and anwer you more thoroughly, but check the moisture level of the soil.

Sorry I had to laugh.
"I just love the little darlings [devil] "

I have one of four I feel the same way about. He is only a year old named Baby. He is a muscular 16lbs of havoc. Every morning he opens all my wood blinds for me. At night he unrolls the whole toilet paper roll onto the floor and then rips it into the smallest pieces he can make. Sometimes he gets a wild hair and runs havoc through the house bounding off furniture and sliding into the walls trying to turn the corner on the slick wood floors. [Frown] While I was gone for 2 wks. by daughter had called to inform me he knocked over a lamp into a katrillion pieces. To top it off he knocked over a little 5 gallon fish aquarium into the cat litter pan as well as on the wood floor while I was still gone. What a mess. So I can relate to the little darlings sometimes. [devil] If I don't laugh about it I will cry. He is so lovable but oohhhh what a terror.

Newbie gardener advice I would change the soil and add more grit to it. Maybe sand. [dunno] Just a suggestion I want to see what others say.

Thanks for the advice. I'm not really sure how to check the moisture level of the soil though?

I think I will hit the nursery over the weekend and see if they can point me to a better soil for it.

Catlover - I think our cats are either soulmates or siblings [grin] My 1 year old, Lucy [nutz] (alhtough my wife affectionatly calls her poo), does the almost the exact same things (our floors are carpeted so she can make the tight turns)

sc, ok, I am more with it now... if the soil feels wet vs damp, that is the problem. ditto if it is sandy dry. another note, the original leaf might shrivel up, but there should be a new baby plant at the base. I water mine when the soil gets dry. I have 2 baby plants that are growing soooooo verrrry slow, but they are getting there!

Jiffy -
That makes sense for the soil. I definitely think my soil is not right now. Hopefully, I'll be able to get a good mix this weekend before it is beyond repair!

As for the original leaf - It's not shriveling up, it's actually turning black and rotting into nothing (and very quickly I might add) When I get home this evening I am going to put them in with one of my other plants that has some better soil, and see what happens.

Thank you for all of your help.

Scott,
that is what I do. I put the leaves in a pot with something that is growing well. that makes it easier to gage. good luck
