Hi, I recently purchased 2 Venus Fly Traps (dionaea muscipula), and im bit confused on how to care for them. I keep tem in a small room by a closed window near a bright light. When I bought the lady said I shouldnt put them in a little tray(because it interferes with the roots or something) with one inch of water but the websites do, what should I do? They all droopy to I dont know what im doing wrong. Thanks. PS> The room temp is 80 celcious.

You will find a lot of tips about your flytrap on http://www.thegardenhelper.com/flytrap.html If you use the "Forum Search" right below the "post topic" button you will find a lot of posts from the forum as well.
I have always grown flytraps in straight spaghnum moss that is kept moist. Maintaining an inch of water in the tray doesn't sound like a good idea to me at all... The best environment is in a terrarium! http://www.thegardenhelper.com/terrarium.html

Ok Bill, I read that. I found my old aquarium, cleaned it out and put in the 2 plants (theyre already in pots) so I poored a bit of water in it. I keep my plants near this big light by the windowsill. Is this good? Is there still sometime to save their droopyness?

I have a fly trap that is currently dying.... I cut of the black dying pieces, and keep filling the container with water....it is kept in a warm window.....I think that it is just a hopeless cause to try to keep it alive.....

All I can suggest is that you raise the pot by placing enough pebbles under it so that the base is only slightly in the water. (The main reason for having the basin of water is for the humidity.
The growing medium must remain moist, but not soggy!
Are your plants getting direct sun or just bright light ?
Experiment with setting your plants different areas.
Don't use tap water!!!

Thanks Bill, Someday, I'll get one of those, When I've got some spare space.
I used to have mimosa's (those touch plants) and they were alot of fun to watch!!!
I've often said, that I'd never be able to have something like a snake that I'd have to feed it live mice or grasshoppers, but I could definately feed a venus fly trap a fly without any mixed feelings, gladly feed them those critters!!!!
Do the V.F.T. eat any other bugs???

I never use tap water in my fly trap....heard that that was bad....I will have to try putting somes pebbles in the water so it doesn't get too saturated.....I keep it in a pretty warm window and it has caught a few flys actually......just seems like it is struggling lately......

Snoopreg,
You didn't mention what kind of light is nearby. If it is incandescent, then it will not help. In fact, the heat that it gives off will dry the surrounding air and lower the humidity.
Bright indirect window light is best. Otherwise, use a fluorescent light that is placed close to the plant.
