I have a the rosary vine and so does my sister. Both our plants are completely different. Her leaves are much smaller and a bright green. Mine has larger leaves that are very thick and dark in color. I was able to start making a plant from hers with the bulbs that started growing in the middle of the vine. My plant does not do that at all. Is there a difference with our plants or will my plant start to get the bulbs too? Honestly, I like the looks of hers better than mine.

Rosary Vine (Ceropegia woodii) is hanging plant with long, hanging stems, and small, heart shaped leaves. The leaves are dark green and marbled with silver. The easiest way to propagate is from cuttings or from the growth buds which apear at the base of the leaves. The buds should be sown as seeds. This plant grows well in a normal room temperature in the summer and prefers a slightly cooler position in the winter, preferably 60 to 65 degrees F. It can stand in full sunlight all years round as long as it is protected from burning rays of the midday. Keep moist but not never wet. Feed with a diluted liquid fertilizer from May to August.(From Success with Houseplants)

If your vine was grown from your sister's plant maybe the difference is due to your's/her's cultural practices.

lxygurl, to add to papito's words, another problem may be that you have different plants all together. Many plants are marketed as one thing or another (example: umbrella tree) but are in reality different plants (one kind of umbrella tree is a schefflera, the other is something I have no clue about). If you can post a picture of your plants or email them to Bill, our webmaster, we can better help you. Oh, and welcome to the forum. I can promise you that someone here will have the answer. Most probably Bill himself, if not, then either Will or Alan. Of course if all else fails, Weezie is our resident research hound. She finds everything!! Happy gardening

In the first reply there was a web page to go to. On that page it shows a picture of the rosary vine. That is a smaller version of my plant. From what I can tell the leaves are the same as mine. I haven't figured out yet how to put images on this web site and the pictures that I did take aren't all that great. Thanks for all the help and for welcoming me to the forums.

Hello luxgurl,
Welcome to The Garden Helpers Forum, Welcome aboard!!! Glad to have ya!!
Got a great bunch of gardeners here.
Some one will swing by and give you an answer.
I think I'll leave these ones to Will, Bill and Papito, (and you jiffy, you have alot of indoor plants). I gave up on indoor plants when I had kids and I moved from my parents house that we used to call the gold fish bowl room, huge picture windows and I had monstrous plants, monstrous plants!!!!!
But when you move into a small upper apt. that barely has windows, well you can forget that!!!! Just doesn't work.........
I'm out doors now and when the kids grow up I'll get back into them.

Happy Gardening lxygurl!!!!
Stick around we're a great group here!!
Weezie
I have relatives in Edgewater,

Thanks. At this point it's more that I'm curious than anything. I forgot about one other thing. Before my sister and I really knew anything at all about this plant we tried to root it in water. It didn't work. Then I found out about the bulbs which it seemed like it took a long time before they started growing in the vine. With my plant, I have rooted a few pieces that broke off with my move to my new house. It's really wierd. As far as Edgewater, it sounds familiar but I'm not sure how far it is from here.

From your brief description, I would guess that you may have a rosary vine (Ceropegia woodii) and your sister may have a close relative called lamp flower (Ceropegia caffrorum. Both have the same care requirements.

The sticker on the pot when she bought did say that it was a rosary vine. Do those two plants look that much alike?

I was just looking at my plant today. I noticed that all the new growth looks like the leaves that are on my sisters plant. I'm not sure if we have different plants or is it that mine is older? My plant also doesn't get the bulbs on the strands.

I have a rosary vine which a neighbor was throwing out. It was pathetic but about a year ago I cut off all the long strands which were all wound up in a mess repotted and now it is taking off. Thanks for letting me know what it is. Another mystery solved. This one has little balls where the flower looking things are coming out. It is still pretty straggly but it is getting better now. My plant and my sisters plant never got any flowers. Everything that I have ever read about it said that it is suppose to get flowers.
