This is the Happy Wanderer in Suburban Chicago (Zone 5). Planted crocus bulbs in my backyard about 3 weeks ago and with our relatively mild weather, they have all sprouted. Do I just let them bloom (if we don't have a hard freeze first), and will they come up in the spring. This is my first experience with planting crocuses and any help is appreciated.

Hey HappyWanderer, First off , I'd like to Welcome to The Garden Helpers Forum!! Glad to have you here!
And just to let you know I moved your post to here, so that our gardeners that come through, will have a more specific place for your question..and hopefully get your question answered a bit faster when it's localized in a section where they were more likely to look.
I'm not too well versed on bulbs, I have several of them, but I have a question, were they spring crocus's or fall crocus's...?????????? That may be why they are sprouting now..... Did you save the package, or name of them???? If you did, can you let us know??
If they were fall blooming ones, that's a good possibility why they bloomed now. Bulbs are quiet the resilient little plants.
Hopefully some one with a little better knowledge of bulbs will come around and give you some help. Stick around and read up on some of the good reading Bill has here at his site....
Do you have other flowers as well??? We love to hear about plants and flowers!!!

I have relatives in Chicago, Calumet City and some over the line at Hammond,Ind. Close or no cigar??

Weezie13 and Jiffymouse, Thank you for the welcome! Have visited this web site in the past. Just registered today for the forum. The crocus are supposed to bloom mid-Spring. Instructions say to plant in fall before ground freezes. I bought them at Home Depot (20 Giant Crocus). Will probably just have to wait and see.
Thanks again, Happy Wanderer!

Hello HappyWanderer, If they were spring bulbs, When they were shipped, they might have been exposed to light and warmth, which tricked them into thinking it was time. The store could have been too warm as well, or under a heater..Some places might not think of things like that, that will cause bulbs to start growing... They are pretty hardy guys.. If you're worried about them, maybe once the really cold weather starts coming around, take some chopped up leaves and sprinkle some over the top, Not too much, as they still need a little photosynthesis to put food back into the bulb, but it may keep it a bit insultated enough to get some food back into their the bulb...??? This is just guessing, but I've had alot of bulbs come up in the middle of winter, well, they're in the wrong spot, too warm for them, they think it's spring here in February... and they've come through fine, Got frosted a few times, and still came back again the next spring. But time will tell, but remember one thing in gardening, unfortunately you'll loose some plants, but you'll end up a better gardener with the knowledge that the next time, you might look earlier for bulbs, check out where they're stored when you buy them, order from a place that guarentees the bulbs and you can bring them back or call and tell them you weren't satisfied. A number of things that will make you a better gardener in future gardening projects.... It's hard to loose them, but if the information gained from their demise, than they didn't go in vain!! (not to sound too sappy)
Hope I've helped you!!! Weezie
