I recently transplanted some houseplants into larger containers. I inadvertantly purchased top soil instead of potting soil. Ever since, I have had these little winged bugs flying around my house. They remind me of fruit flys though I don't know what they are other than annoying!
Any advice on what they might be and how to get rid of them? I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks!!

They are called fungus gnats and Will Creed can give you information on how to get rid of them. I know what a pain in the b*tt they are. If he doesn't get back with you, bring this up again and I will look up where he wrote about it for someone else. There is hope! Catlover

Okay I found the info. where you can read what others have posted regarding fungus gnats. Look under:
"questions about Pests" 1/8/03 Plant pests and problems "bunch of questions" 6/1/03 Houseplants "Jade Plant Dropping Leaves and branches" 6/13/03 Houseplants
Hope this helps. Will Creed knows ALOT about houseplants and if your plants are in the house and you have animals/kids you should probably go his route. I used the diazanon with good results but had to treat several times. Takes time but you will get rid of the little stinkers. Catlover

Thank you for researching this for me! How do I lookup that information? (Sorry, I'm so needy.) I can't wait to get on with getting rid of these things! Thanks again for looking up the info. It was very kind.

Go back and see at the top of the page...there is a place to type in...."garden search"...type in fungus gnats...and that will give you I believe 3 sites...click on each one and read all the comments, keeping in mind Will Creeds opinion first...He's the expert!!!!. Sometimes other things work but try his first. If this is clear as mud put it up again and I will see if I can clear the water. Good Luck and let us know how it turns out! Catlover

I found the posts! I've been letting the soil dry out and I've found that they have dwindled significantly in number. In addition, I think I will try some sand on top and if that doesn't work I'll give the taters a try!! This is the kind of solution I was looking for. Don't like the idean of pesticides for myself, my family or my cats. Thanks so much, once again, for your help. I'll let you know how it turns out.
