I just bought a jade plant 6 months ago... since then it has grown quite a bit (like 1 1/2 inches) and seems to be doing fine except the leaves are turning a reddish purplish color underneath the leaves. Is it getting too much sun perhaps?

That is normal for jades. when they are happy and healthy and getting enough sun, they turn red around the edges and underneath. you must be doing it right - but search the forum, there are alot of good posts about jades.
