For the past 6 years I have had a wisteria planted in my side yard. It climbes like crazy over a metal arbor (it distroted the wooden one)and produces leaves, but no flowers. We are debating about digging it up and planting something else in the spring. Any tips that I haven't tried?

Hey ZEM57, [wayey]
Welcome to The Garden Helpers Forum.

I just wanted to let you know that I moved your
post to Flowers, Plants and Gardening..........
Sometimes we have gardeners that specifically go to one area or so and if it's in there, it's more likely to get answered by one of the gardeners going through.

I personally don't grow those gorgeous vines,
but in the meantime, while you wait,
if you do a GARDEN SEARCH at the top, Bill has alot of good information on growing them.
And we've had a discussion or two about them here on the forum, so if you do a FORUM SEARCH at the top, you can read up on some of the posts that we've had. Lot's of good reading there too!!

So, again, Welcome to the Garden Helpers........
Enjoy yourself, hope you stick around to add your voice to our growing number of gardeners here.

[gabby] Weezie [gabby]

I have read those vines take a long time to establish before they start to bloom.
And they require heavy~heavy pruning.
And require of THE STURDIEST STRUCTURES FOR GROWING....

Do you do any other types of gardening???

Wisterias require moist soil and lots of sun to bloom, and it can take 5 to 10 years for a newly planted one to even start blooming. Root pruning, withholding water and using only phoshate fertilizer (no nitrogen at all) may bring a reluctant wisteria into bloom, according to a book I have.

Well it's old enough to bloom. I have one I train as kind of a big bush. Here i s what I was told to do and it worked for me.

When you hard prune in late winter/very early spring leave at least 5 leaf nodes on each vine. Have you been fertilzing it? 15-30-15 should be fine. Too late now for that though I think. Couldn't hurt now I guess unless the ground is frozen up there, your farther north than me. The ground here in the Hudson Valley is still workable. Mine has LONG purple flowers and is COVERED but it took 6 years after I planted it. Try doing that and hang in there, it'll bloom. When it does you'll FREAK OUT! I'd attach a photo of mine but I'm not sure how to do it on this forum. The image button wants a URL.

give it time...it will bloom.you say you've had it planted for 6 yrs,did you plant it 6 yr ago?or did you aquire it?
I aquired mine.it bloomed cause I chopped it down....then found out i missed some....well it bloomed with the apple blossoms so I changed my mind.so been training what i missed up a apple tree& over my rose of sharon& have some that i was chopping out that had moved to a spot growing up a teepee made from bamboo
I miss my pink& white but will learn to like the purple& be sure to check my albulm in spring bout march.will have photos of mine and one from down the road that is growing up in pine trees& is huge.missed where your from, but plants don't use too much fertilizer once ground temps are at 50 or lower.maybe in the spring try root pruneing.....about 3 ft out you'll shove shovel in ground at roots and it will freak plant out and may bloom.I did this to my white

Thank you all for helping me make a decision about my wisteria. I have not been pruning it as much as I should have, so I will do that. I am going to keep it and give it some more time. I am a weekend gardener, but avid painter, so my garden does get neglected at times. I love it for my inspiration. Again, thank you for your assistance.

Hey ZEM57 [wayey]
I just wanted to Thank~You for your reply!!
We are always more than happy to help
fellow gardeners with gardening questions.. [Smile]
But it's nice that you took a couple of seconds
to answer us back!! [clappy] [thumb]
We always appreciate knowing that our
answers were read.... And hopefully a big help!

I read where you do paintings!!!
Can I ask what kind???
We have a section here called Crafts, Creativity and Hobbies!!! I think I even started a heading with painting.....
We have alot of stuff in there, to keep us busy
during the winter/down months with NO gardening to get us through those cold, dark, winter nights.
Please feel free to add your special touch there.
We'd appreciate it, and always love to hear about
others hobbies!! Which inspires a few of us!!

What type of week~end gardening do you do???
Just curious!!

Hey Hon!

If it makes you feel any better, i too have a wisteria that has never bloomed, and I've had it at least that long. I bought it as a cheap little runner. I've tried everything from timed fertilization, careful late-winter count-the-nodes pruning, fall pruning, root pruning, transplanting, but it still won't produce a single flower. I've read that sometimes you get duds, especially if it was a cheapie. BUT I WON'T GIVE UP! This year my husband all but chopped it down. There's still a bit of stick left. If the thing ever blooms, I'll faint of happiness. Then I'll write in with photos. You and I can have a friendly race to see whose dud wisteria blooms first. Whaddya say?
