Hello. How can I find out about buying and planting heather? Would like to find out what type of heather will grow well in hard, sandy, soil. I live in northern MI. Thanks

I'm going to bring this one back to the top....
Any one know anything about Heather???
I grew one once and it was a grocery plant,
and with my weather, that's not a good mix.
It went up and brown on me.....
I know they are very pretty!!!

Heathers need a fast draining, sandy, acidic soil to thrive. Read this page if you're not sure about your soil's pH..... http://www.thegardenhelper.com/acidsoil.html

Heathers need full sun, and should be fed heavily with an "evergreen" type fertilizer in late February and again in June.

I would dig up the planting area, and add enough peat moss to your sandy soil so that it about a 50-50 mix.

Most Heathers are very hardy but you should check a good local nursery to see which varieties are best suited for your area.
