I read somewhere that lupin seeds should be frozen for 24-48 hours before sowing, i.e. that they need a cold spell for optimal germination. I just bought some Russell (hybrid) Mix Lupin seeds, and am wondering whether a) the cold-treatment is necessary for ALL lupin species, and b) prepackaged seed would have already undergone any cold-treatment necessary. Also, I gather that Russell Mix lupins prefer more fertile soil than the L. perennis, which I was hoping to ultimately intersperse with the hybrids. As far as you/anyone knows, is it possible to grow both on the same site? Thank you!

Hi era... Seeds that you harvest from your plants should undergo the chilling period, but any that you purchase in pkts should have already been chilled. Soaking your seeds in warm water for 24 hours will speed up the germination considerably (or you could nick the seed coat).
There is no reason whatsoever why you can't plant the Russell hybrids in the same bed as your species Lupines... They all came from the same ancestors!
