About 3 years ago I planted 3 bird of paradise plants in my backyard. Not knowing about this site that they are potting plants. Oh well, they are very established and healthy, but I have never had a bloom or anything that resembles thought of a bloom. Are they doomed to never bloom??? By the way I am in the Houston, TX area.

Hi Theresa.....

Bird of Paradise is a perennial in and come from South Africa, where they grow around the riverbanks and open glades. They will grow where the minimum temp is 50F (10C), otherwise need to be grown as a house plant.

Bird of Paradise (Strelitza) like to be root bound and a bit neglected. Do not over fertilize as this will result in lots of lush foliage and no flowers.

Good luck

A friend of mine gave me a huge potted bird of paradise about a year and a half ago. While in possession it bloomed. I did repot it after receiving the plant and unfortunately had to give it away when I moved to a smaller house. I gave it to an architect friend of mine who has an old warehouse for an office (lots of light). The plant is doing well but I have not heard of any blooms.
