I have 2 buddleias that I planted last year. One has a little new growth near the base and the other has no new growth. I don't know if I'm supposed to cut them back to the ground, prune partially or just leave them alone and they will come back. They were the favorite part of my garden last summer, but I'm a notoriously bad gardener and I really don't want to kill these beautiful bushes. Since u r from Minnisota u shouldn't have to worry about pruning Buddleia (Butterfly Bushes), because freezing winter weather does the pruning for u. Your top growth is winter killed anyway.Just cut what is dead standing in the spring and new growth should come from the roots as the weather gets warmer. Buddleia normally survives in zones 5 to 9. Only the very southeast corner of Minnisota is in zone 5;so,u might be in an area where it is more apt to be winter killed.U said that one came up but not the other. Just wait- it might still come, otherwise it might have not survived the cold. When cold weather rolls around again, it might be wise to pile lots of leaves or mulch aropund where your butterfly bushes are growing to help insulate the roots from the extreme cold temps. When spring rolls around rake the leaves or mulch away.
Good luck with your gardening. Minnisota is a very pretty state (i just don't like the cold temps and the long winters- I left Vt and never looked back!!!) I love the warm temps and sunny days in the South! gardendreamer03@aol.com
