I am new to gardening, and would like to replace an existing Leylandii hedge with one of similar density. I like the look of the Golden Privet (Ligustrum Aurium) but books say it is semi-evergreen. Can anyone tell me what this means. I live in Scotland and temperatures get down to -10c occassionally.

Trees and shrubs may be deciduous (drop all their leaves in their dormant season), or evergreen (retaining their foliage the entire year). Semi-evergreen plants will retain some of their leaves in milder climates (but would drop them all in cold climates and have to regrow them each year). So, semi-evergreen means if the climate is warm enough the plant will only drop a portion of its leaves.
