i am brand new to gardens and not good at it at all. My question is this...i bought about 10 new perennial plants/flowers and the woman at the shop told me that after their bloom is over and they begin to die to cut the flower off at the stem and that it will stimulate new growth for the next bloom...is that correct...should i do that because they are beginning to die now.

Yes, you can cut them back if you like. I always leave some though. Birds eat some of the seed-heads in the winter. I don't mind seeing stalks in my garden if it will feed a couple of birds in the winter. You can always cut them back in the spring. Good luck

Most flowers will have an extended blooming season if you cut them back. I take the spent flowers and spread the seed in my garden so the next year I'll have even more of that type of flower. Good Luck with your new garden. There is a lot of pleasure to be had from the beauty of it.
