Cupheas are frost tender perennial shrubs which are only hardy in USDA Zones 10 - 12. (Occasionally they will survive the winters in Zones 8 and 9, but die back to the roots.) In all other zones this vigorous plant is grown as an annual or as a house plant... Cupheas bloom from spring through fall and are excellent plants for hummingbirds as well as additions to your butterfly garden.
Cupheas grow best in full, bright sun but will tolerate periods of light shade. They prefer a rich, well draining soil with moderate to heavy watering but they will tolerate short periods of drought. Pinch back the tips of each stem to create and maintain a dense compact shape.
Cupheas easily grown from seed which should be sown indoors in January or February. They can also be propagated from short stem tip cuttings taken in late spring or early summer.

OMG!!! I HAVE to get some of these for my hummingbird/butterfly gardens next year! They are beautiful! I wonder if I could dig them up at the end of summer and keep them in the house for the winter..... Or, would you have to just plant them in pots to bring in so you wouldn't disturb the roots? Guess you could just move them around outside easier if they were in pots! I like to re-arrange my yard constantly!

I only planted one, because I didn't want to waste them in case I did something WRONG. (Who...ME???)
It didn't come up, so now I have two started since day before yesterday. I let Brennan do it, so they'll probably come up! He put them in a mixture of potting soil and some other stuff in little paper cups that I use for my sign (lettering) paint.

Is it the glowing red eyes or the fangs or the hornlike ears that scare you Cindy? Maybe the fact that you know its alive? Did you know that on Halloween night, at midnight, all the Cupheas rise up from the garden and can fly about freely til dawn? Get your camera ready!

I have some of the Bat Faced Cuphea but would like to know where to get the pink cigar plant. Does anyone know where in Houston? I'm just learning more about these plants since I've only grown daylilies and Iris's. I've gone crazy and just started buying all the Hummer and butterfly plants I can find. I love the bat face! Is it me or does that picture look more like a dragon?

Does anyone have bat face seeds? I bought a bat face plant early last fall. I had never seen it before and loved it right away. I divided it into three plants because it was so big. I hoped to winter it over and brought it inside. Very quickly, it developed spider mites. When I sprayed it, all three plants died. They didn't even have a chance to go to seed before the mites attacked them. I would really love to have this plant this summer and would be very grateful if anyone has some seeds to spare.
