I bought a 12 inch basket. I need some advice on plants to put in it. Im going to put this in a shady area. Give me How many plants to buy? And the smallest to the tallest to put in this basket and center and sides etc. I would prefer some color to this basket. Any ideas! ZONE 8B.

are you going to use the hanging basket indoors or outdoors? If indoors I like coleus. It is shade loving and very colorful. But it will die if temps reach below 50. Its an annual so you have to clip off the flower heads when they show up or it will die after flowering. It's very easy to go. I don't know much about plants but i'm learning alot by being here. Good luck with you hanging basket and let me know what you finally decide.

Hi! My mom has a patio container with coleus in the center, and impatiens around the coleus. It's very pretty, and you can coordinate the colors to match. [Wink]

Weezie... Have you ever put Love Lies Bleeding in a basket??? I'm very curious because mine grew to be about 6' tall!!! Please let me know! I'm thinking of doing them again this year.

Deb, my favorite flower in the garden last year was Lobelia, Crystal Palace. I had 2 12" baskets full of them. Oh my they were gorgeous! and everywhere they touched dirt, they put out more roots so, as they started spilling over the sides too much, I flopped them over on to the top of the soil and, in two or three days, they'd rooted and bloomed even more!!! Beautiful flowers.

But they were in full sun. Also the Love Lies Bleeding I had in full sun.

Deb,
I grew these last summer too,
I love them...
but they do need to stay moist or
they stop blooming....

Torenia

And I grew Potato Vines

I grew the lime green one and the black/drk purple one, but this is the first time I've ever
seen the reddish colored one...

Deb,
Ooooooooh, just found some pictures for you...
Hanging Baskets
They don't say what their names are, I can tell you most of them if some are unfirmiliar!!!

***Sachis,
I can only say that I have once,
*and loved it..*never saw it for sale here again ~I live in the boonies, so I was lucky I guess [Roll Eyes] to see it once..*

It did very nicely, not as big as your 6'ter,
and not as pretty as the one picture I posted,
but the pink flowers hung over the sides..

I am now starting to be a bit more firmiliar with seeds, so I may find me a packet sometime...

When I grew them, I don't remember adding much in the way of fert or anything.... probably were lucky I even watered them....*I am always pulled in too many directions around here* [Eek!]

Do you have a picture of that 6'ter????
Would love to see that!!!
Oh, that must have been bee~u~ti~fulllllllllll!!!!

fuschias(2-3 foot wide, trailing) do excellent in the shade, and the appropriate varieties look killer in hanging baskets.
pansies(6-8 inches tall and wide) are great too, as well as impatiens(6-36 inches tall and wide).
i personally would not mix any of these varieties together, but would do each one individually. but that's just me! have fun, good luck!

I think Deb's going to have to go back [lala]
and buy some more of those 12 inch baskets. [thumb]

All 3 of Amy's choices are great for baskets....
I love pansy's...
