thistle infestation

My mother put up thistle feeders in her garden outside the kitchen window, now thistles have taken over the whole garden and she has asked me to take care of the problem while she is gone for the summer. She suggested taking out any of the small perenials and then using weed killer. There are so many thistles I think this would kill off all the large bushes and make the ground unfit for any plants at all for quite a while. The thistle is starting to flower, and I need a good solution quickly. Any suggestions?

Take a garden hoe and chop them just below ground level before they flower. One chop per plant, you go thru lots in a short period of time. It's a good workout too. Do it when you had a bad day and you wanna choke your boss!

Longy's idea will work or you can go the spray way, and use Weed b Gone, it will take them right out.
