Does anyone grow pink lily of the valley? I was wondering if it has the same wonderful scent as the white?

I had a nice-sized patch of the white, that I had transplanted 10 years ago, from where the previous owners had planted it in full sun where it was barely hanging on. It grew beautifully where I put it, and I was able to share plants from it with family and friends. Well... last summer we had bats in our attic (again!) and the exterminator apparently set up his ladder in this patch. (I wasn't home when he came - my husband was, and gave no thought to my plants! [Mad] ) Well, the exterminator must have dripped or sprayed some of the stuff he used to chase the bats out of the attic on the plants because for the rest of the summer the plants were completely gone! Not a single leaf could be found! [Eek!]

So, I am wanting to replace my favorite fragrant plants, and was wondering about the pink variety. Anyone know???

I was going to ask,
what makes you think the white are totally gone??

I wouldn't write them totally off....
those things are pretty tenaious!!

The bulb may still be intact,
and maybe what ever the spray was,
only got the leaves???
And another possiblity is if it got the
small circle of them, may be the outter
parts of where they were may still be there..

I'd wait to see if they don't show first.

There is a place I've seen for the Pink L~o~t~V's.
But I can't remember where I've seen it..
I'll keep looking..

Thanks, Weezie! [thumb] I haven't given up on the white... I'm hoping they pop up again this spring - time will tell...

I've been thinking about the pink ones for a few years now anyway, but don't know anyone who actually has grown these. I've see them on rare occassions in the "big box" stores, but sometimes you don't always get what you see on the package... so was just wondering if anyone here has had experience with it. [flower]

I've never seen them in person, but all my catalogs say they are just as fragrant. [dunno]

I have lily of the valley plants too. Imagine my happy surprise when buying the house in the dead of winter, overgrown, etc..in the spring the daffs and tulips started blooming and the lily of the valley. There are so many lilies that the smell is just out of this world.

Being new to plants and flowers, it was a thrill for me....a wonderful surprise.

I hope you find out about the pink lilies....they sound wonderful. I would love some, so I will be looking at this thread closely to see if anyone has a source!

There's pink pussywillow's too!!
So cute, I think both are spring time *ish* plants, not sure if they would bloom at the same
exact time!!
I always thought it would be cute to have them together...

Sorry guys I'm not going to be much help, but do have a question. Plant's and Pot's are the lilly of the valley difficult to grow? I always see it in the catalogs and would love to try it, but never have because I haven't researched how to grow it. Any growing advice?
by weezie13 on January 27, 2004 02:30 PM
Daisey,
If you have dirt and a shovel,
you pretty much can grow them...
Very easy indeed...
And can easily take over a spot in years....
I would think, just keep them out of standing water....or tooooooo wet...they're bulbs.....
I have to mow mine in one area to keep them in line.

Weezie

One thing I know they like the cold or are at least a 4 on the zone map, not sure about the heat though...

Like Weezie said, they are extremely easy to grow - so long as you plant them in the proper setting. The previous owners of my house had put them in full day blaring sun - the patch was very small when I noticed it. Once I moved it under the shade of a large maple tree it took off like gangbusters. I don't mow it, but do have to keep it in check, as it sends out runners and spreads very easily!

Hi, although I don't have any Lily of the Valley currently growing in my yard..I sure do have a big shipment ordered to arrive this spring! For some strange reason this particular plant has really caught my attention. Why am I currently so crazy for Lily of the Valley? It looks so classic and clean. I learned that you should go for the more mature high quality PIPS rather than younger ones - apparently these smaller plants may not bloom for a year (or two). The pink version seems to be twice the price of the whites. I keep wondering if I shouldn't go back and order some pink now... [Roll Eyes]

The smell of lily of the vallies,
in the air is intoxicating!!!
And they multiply every year!!!!!

I love to have them in the kitchen.

And they dry kind of nicely too!!
(they turn a light brown)

I put them in the kitchen too Weezie!
Love the scent! [Cool]
My daughter likes it too, and likes to beat me outside so she can gather some for herself. [kissies] We put them in a special small vase and put it on her night table next to her bed - special times! That's another reason I'll be disappointed if mine don't reappear. I better go order some of those pink ones before they sell out! [thumb]

Obssessed... where did you place your order from? Have you order from there before?

Weezie,
I'm in zone 9. It sounds like it might be too warm here for them. That's too bad because it's such a pretty plant I would love to add it to my garden.

Hello....I just joined here tonite and saw your post about pink LOTV. Like you...I was searching all over for them and was able to find them on e-bay and got them there. I think the place was in Nevada. I've got mine on order. Hope this helps!
by LBoyce on February 15, 2004 03:18 AM
Me Again....I forgot to mention...I ordered the pips...now...here is my sixty-four thousand dollar question...how the heck do you plant a pip? How can you tell which side goes up? I ordered 8 white LOTV's and not one came up. Any help would be really appreciated.
by plants 'n pots on February 15, 2004 03:23 AM
[wayey] WELCOME LBOYCE!!! [wayey]

Thanks for responding to my post!
It's funny... I lived in Nevada for 7 years - left 19 years ago! When I was there, there was very little to find to plant in the way of flowering plants. Not for the lack of trying...
So it's funny that that is where you ended up finding them. I have seen them in catalogues, but I seem to have been taken off their mailing lists since I have never ordered from one.
Guess I'll have to put my name back on the lists.

Where are you in NY? We have a fun sort of rivalry going with our forum friends on the left coast in California, trying to beat them with more members from NY.

What kinds of gardens do you have?
Houseplants too?
Pull up a chair and join in the knowledge and fun on this great site.

Hmmmmmm - I'm not sure about which end is up! [dunno]

The only LOTV that I have grown had already been planted at the house we moved into, so I simply moved them. Do you not see ANY roots on the pips? I'm going to try and do search and see if I can come up with something - stay tuned!

edit: the only thing I can find about how to plant them is to put the pointed end up.
Hope that helps...

Hi Lynne.....

Thanks so much for the warm welcome!! I've only been getting my hands "dirty" for about two years now but this past year I became "immersed"!! Yes...I even went out and stock our house up with house plants as well! I spent this Winter doing a lot of "searching" to help me along. First year, I just dug and put in a few things. Second year...I tried a "little dab of color here and a little dab of color there"....this year...another whole story! Now...if only just SOME of this snow would disappear! Suppose to go -2 below tonite!

Thanks for the websites...off to see what else I can learn...I took a guess and planted my white LOTV's pips and having only a 50/50 chance of being right..it's a good thing I'm not a bettin woman!
by LBoyce on February 16, 2004 12:49 AM
Just checked e-bay again....plenty of pink LOTV's available...and yes...they do have a nice scent to them. My aunt use to have white, pink and blue LOTV's.

I'm in the Catskill Mtns...about 1 1/2 hours upstate from NYC in a one horse town! Only two traffic lites and they're two blocks apart!

I have a bunch of gardens..some little/some a bit bigger. Nothing huge. Just did a raised shade garden and a terrace garden last summer. If I had my way...I'd have our entire front and back all flowers! My dog got a little miffed last summer...couldn't understand why he gets yelled at for digging yet here I was digging all over his back yard! Despite that, he never bothered anything!
by plants 'n pots on February 16, 2004 06:01 PM
Hi again -

I don't have any large gardens (yet), since they don't call this Rockland County for nothing! It is (literally) a real pain to dig for gardens here - ask my husband! Raised gardens might not be a bad idea...

The Catskills are not too far from here. My husband goes to a yoga ranch in Woodburn - are you near there? It's down the road from the Raleigh Hotel (which I haven't been to since I was a kid).

What kind of dog do you have? We have 2 indoor cats and an outside feral cat we call Fraidy. He comes for breakfast and dinner on the deck and then disappears. I always said we would get a dog just as soon as they find a cure for Lymes disease. We've all had ticks inbedded on us, and my nephew has Lymes disease and had to have IV antibiotics several times last year.

Thanks for the heads up on the pink LOTV - I'm going out today to some stores with gardening supplies... if I don't see them I might just have to get some from e-bay. [thumb]
